Does God care about our dressing?

Last week, I came across a tweet which I reacted to, where a lady said that her sister leader of some kind condemned using something called rubber thread to plait their hair, as she said the sister leader proposed that using that to plait their hair will take them to hell. Now in this article I am going to explain these types of controversial subjects which will be based on this tweet and other things Christians can do and not do concerning dressing. So, if you want to be clear on all these types of things you are on the right page.

Can Christians wear Jewelry?

So, let talk about Jewelry for a second, now these are mostly precious things we attach to our body that tend to make us more beautiful and also tend to be made by precious stones or precious materials, examples of jewelries are earrings, chains, necklaces, rings etc. Now let's see what the bible tells us about Jewelry. Let’s look at Genesis 35:1-5, but particularly verse 4. I quote “And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings  which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak tree which was by Shechem.” if you read the whole passage from 1-5, you would see that when Jacob told them to bring their strange gods they gave him their jewelries which were earrings, which means those jewelry they had were idols(strange gods). and what does the bible say in the ten commandments, let’s look at Exodus 20:3, I quote “Thou shall have no other gods before me.” Which means jewelries are idols and God commands us not to have any other god before Him. Now, let’s look at the New Testament, Let’s go to 1 Timothy 2:9, I quote “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided (braided) hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.” Now note this before I continue that if God is condemning something and he mentions maybe man or woman, it doesn’t mean it is for only women or men, it is for both. And we can see here that God commands his children not to wear gold, pearls and costly array and we know that this are some of the attributes of jewelries, now when it comes to wrist watches, there is no sin if the head of the wrist watch ( like the engine of the watch is gold, probably for mechanical and/or durability reasons) Is gold no problem there, As we know that even when the head of the watch is gold or silver it is not that attractive, but when the strap of the wrist watch is golden or made of silver, it now makes the watch very attractive and loud and we know how expensive all these kind of watches go for, so let’s try to be modest in all things, And if you notice God has been against jewelries since the old testament. Now let’s even go deep into time. What was used to make the golden calf that the Israelite worshiped, it was the jewelries they used, you can make research on that from the bible.

Can Christians wear expensive clothes?

We will still go to the Bible to answer this question, Now let’s look at 1 Peter 3:3. I quote “Whose adorning let it not be of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold or of putting of apparel.” also let’s look at 1 Timothy 2:9, I quote “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in MODEST APPAREL, with shamefacedness and sobriety: not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or COSTLY ARRAY.” Now we see that these two scriptures complement each other. Now you may say, is Peter saying that we should not were clothes, NO, probably due to translation issues as the bible was not originally written in English, that is why it was translated like that, but what he means is costly apparel, But we can see that in Timothy two major things were said about this topic, Modest Apparel and Costly array, now let’s explain these two things, We should dress in modest apparel and not in highly expensive clothes like designer clothes were you probably see just a shirt for about a thousand dollars a Christian doesn’t need all that even if you have the money as that is worldliness and we see the word costly array, which most computer programmers or computer related people would understand better, that an array is a list of things. Now when the bible is saying costly array it is not just talking about only expensive cloths. But a list of expensive things like expensive cloths, expensive jewelries, and other expensive things we wear on our bodies. Therefore, Christians are not allowed by God to were expensive cloths.

Can Christians plait their hair?

You may have seen the word “hair” mentioned a lot in the bible passages I have been quoting, now this is the time to talk about the most controversial question of all, can Christians plait their hair?

We will talk about this after a short commercial break.

Just kidding …….

So, let’s go over the same verses, but now in focus to the hair aspect.  Now let’s look at 1 Peter 3:3. I quote “Whose adorning let it not be of PLAITING THE HAIR, and of wearing of gold or of putting of apparel.” also let’s look at 1 Timothy 2:9, I quote “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety: not with BROIDED HAIR, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.” We see that in these two verses they out rightly condemn plaiting of hair, now let’s look at the first scripture passage. Whose adorning let is not be of plaiting the hair, now if you notice in the second passage it also mentioned the word adorn, but it is said there as ”adorn themselves in modest apparel,” which shows you that the word adorn is  not defining a sin, but showing you how to beautify yourself, let’s look at this scripture 1 Peter 3:4-5, I quote “But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not the corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit which is the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.”. That means that the bible is not saying you can plait your hair but don’t decorate or beautify it, NO. It is the plating of the hair that is the beautification that God doesn’t allow. You can put the scripture in this form, “whose beautification let it not be of plating the hair or by plaiting the hair.” Now in the second bible passage it was even more direct and simpler.” Not with broided hair,” Now what word can you also use for broided hair, you can use braided hair, Now braided hair does not mean only when you do the hairstyle called "braids," braiding involves twisting or weaving of the hair. So, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established (an extract from 2 Corinthians 13:1).” as I have given about two verses on this topic this doctrine has been established.

Also bonus tip, are Christians allowed to do fancy hairstyles, or shape their hair, well the answer is No. According to this scripture. Leviticus 19:27 “He shall not round the corners of your head, neither shalt thou mar the corners of your beards.” In verse 28 we see it is also bad to do tattoos as Christians “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the lord.” We can see the passage ended with I am the lord to show you He is very serious about what He said here. I won’t talk much about this, but I hope you get the point.

Now you may say, these are hard saying, but I tell you that that was the same that they told Jesus in John 6:60, I quote “Many of his disciples, when they heard this said, this is a hard saying, who can hear it.”  I know to do all these things are hard and it only needs the grace of God. As you are seated or standing or whatever posture you took while reading this you can ask God to give you the grace to obey all that is in the Bible.

Now if you’re not born again and you do all these it will still not take you to heaven. Firstly, ask Jesus into your life, you can follow these steps.

Realize you are a sinner.

Accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour.

Believe he came to die for you.

Confess your sins unto him.

Decide to follow Jesus.

Ask for grace daily to live above sin.

Congratulations if you followed those steps, you are now born again. And you are now fit to obey all that God has commanded us to do.

In conclusion, does God care about the way we dress, and does it affect the Christian life? The answer is Yes. That will be the end of today’s post. If you still have questions about this topic, you can ask in the comment section, even if you don’t want to follow this blog which I would love you to do, please try your best as possible to share this article with as many people as you can, as many people need to read this, you can save many souls from going to Hell, instead of them going to hell just because of ignorance.
