There’s a popular Christian poem that ends with these comforting words: “When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
These simple lines speak volumes about the faithfulness of God, especially in our most uncertain and difficult moments. Life rarely follows a straight path. We face seasons of confusion, transition, silence, and fear. And in those times, it’s often hard to see God's hand or understand His plan. But like the footprints in the sand, God's guidance is often clearer in hindsight.
One of the hardest lessons we learn as believers is that we are not in control. We can make plans, set goals, and map out our dreams, but uncertainty has a way of knocking at the door when we least expect it. Whether it's a sudden loss, a closed door, or a delayed promise, we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory.
But uncertainty doesn’t mean God is absent. In fact, it often means He’s working in ways we can’t yet see “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5. God doesn’t require us to understand the journey, only to trust the One who leads.
Trust isn’t built overnight. It grows in the wilderness, where the next step isn’t clear, and the path feels hidden. Think of Abraham, called to go to a land he didn’t know. Or Moses, leading a people through the desert with nothing but God's promise. These were men who walked by faith, not by sight. And their stories remind us that God’s guidance is often progressive, He reveals just enough for the step you’re on.
Sometimes, the most unsettling part of uncertainty is God’s silence. It feels like He’s distant or uninterested. But silence doesn’t equal absence. In fact, it often means He's inviting us to lean in, to listen closer, to trust deeper. Like the poem, it's usually after the storm has passed that we look back and see the evidence of His hand, carrying us when we thought we were alone.
You want to learn to trust God in uncertainties?
- Stay anchored in the Word. Scripture reveals God’s character, and when we can’t trace His hand, we can trust His heart.
- Pray honestly. Bring your fears, questions, and doubts to Him. He’s not intimidated by your humanity.
- Seek godly counsel. Sometimes God speaks through trusted mentors and spiritual leaders.
- Remember past faithfulness. Keep a journal of testimonies, reminders of when God came through before.
Whenever you find yourself in a season of uncertainty, know this: You are not lost. You are being led. The footsteps may not always be yours. Sometimes, they are His, carrying you through the unknown. So walk forward in faith. The One who promised never to leave you hasn’t stopped walking with you. Even when you can’t see the way, He is the Way.
