The Paradox of Soaring and Grounding
“For those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.” Have you ever considered that the only way to soar is to stay grounded, and the only way to truly live is to die? This paradox challenges our natural inclinations and reveals deeper spiritual truths.
Fire for Jesus vs. Public Appearances
As believers, we often mistake being in the limelight for being on fire for Jesus. This is a misconception. We tend to prioritise public appearances while neglecting intimate fellowship with Him. In reality, it is the grounded seeds that grow into strong trees capable of standing firm against the winds of life.
Roots and Wings: A Lesson from Agriculture
Now, this is how I picture it—roots and wings. As an agricultural engineering student, I studied crop production and learned that the planting depth of various crops depends on their lifecycle. The strength and height of a crop often rely on the depth of its roots, among other factors. For instance, the root depth of a bean plant significantly differs from that of a mango tree.
The Lifecycle of a Bean vs. a Mango Tree
A bean plant completes its lifecycle in less than a year. Even at its maximum height, a toddler can easily uproot it, stripping away everything it represents. In contrast, a mango tree takes its time, expanding space for its roots over many years. It’s no surprise that its roots can even disrupt the foundations of buildings. Over time, it grows taller, bears more fruit, and develops extensive branches.
The Spiritual Parallel: Deep Roots for a Lifelong Journey
As believers, our lifecycle extends until we meet our King. This is why we must be deeply rooted in the Word of God, ensuring we cannot be easily uprooted by life’s troubles. No wonder the angel instructed Elijah to eat, for the journey was long. I liken this "eating" to establishing strong roots. It’s forever true to say, "The depth of our roots determines how high we soar."
