Eternal treasure: Finding worth beyond this world

It’s easy to measure our lives by achievements, wealth, or status. Society teaches us to chase after success but Jesus offers a different way. He tells us in Matthew 6:19-21not to store up treasures on earth, but to seek treasures in heaven, where they will never decay or be stolen.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

Earthly things are temporary. No matter how much we gather, they eventually fade away. But the treasures we build in heaven — love, faith, kindness, generosity — are eternal. They follow us beyond this life.

The story of the rich young ruler (Mark 10:17-22) reminds us of the cost of clinging too tightly to earthly things. Though he lived a good life, his wealth had a grip on his heart. When Jesus asked him to let it go and follow, he walked away sorrowful. His eyes were fixed on what he could see, and he missed the treasure he could have had.

True worth is not found in how much we possess, but in who we are to God. In Luke 12:6-7, Jesus assures us that we are deeply valued by the Father — every hair on our heads is numbered. Our identity in Him is more precious than anything the world can offer.

Living for eternal treasure means investing in what matters most: relationships, service, prayer, and obedience. It means living with open hands — using the blessings we have, but not letting them define our hearts.

At the end of our lives, trophies, titles, and possessions will stay behind. But love, faith, and the souls we impacted will echo into eternity.

Let’s set our hearts on what lasts forever.
