Grace upon grace: How God renews us daily

“Those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength”. Biblically, renewal refers to the process of spiritual transformation and restoration that occurs when an individual or community turns back to God and experiences His forgiveness, healing, and restoration.

In the book of 2 Chronicles 7:14, the Bible says, if my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray; and turn from their wicked ways, I will heal them. This scripture symbolizes a process of being renewed . God’s endless supply of mercy love and favor makes our renewal possible.

I would like to quickly dive into the story of Elijah’s renewal. A friend asked me why it is so overwhelming to be a Christian. I sometimes feel that way, and Elijah and many other believers have felt that way at one point or the other of their lives.

Finding Renewal in the Stillness: Elijah’s Story

Have you ever felt like Elijah, overwhelmed and exhausted, wondering if you’re truly making a difference? He even wished to die, and his catchphrase was “I am not better than my fathers”. The prophet Elijah’s story is a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, God is present, working to renew and restore us.

A Low Point

After a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah faced intense pressure, fear, and burnout. He fled to the wilderness, feeling alone and hopeless (1 Kings 19:1-18). He found himself in a life-threatening situation, and on impulse, fled.  Sound familiar? We’ve all been there – drained, discouraged, and doubting our purpose.

God’s Gentle Approach

In the wilderness, God met Elijah in a remarkable way. Instead of dramatic displays of power, God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-13). This quiet, intimate moment reminds us that God often works in subtle ways, speaking directly to our hearts.

Renewal and Restoration

As Elijah rested and received provision from God, he began to experience renewal. God gave him new assignments and tasks, refocusing his attention on the bigger picture (1 Kings 19:15-18). This reminds us that God’s plans for us are bigger than our current struggles.

Elijah’s experience encourages us to seek God’s renewal and restoration. In the stillness, God speaks, provides, and empowers us to live out our purpose. May we find comfort in His gentle presence, trusting in His goodness and provision.

I would like to add, with this, that renewal happens at that point of our lives that we’re the most broken. If God would renew us, we have to be broken, humble and accept that He holds the keys to our renewal.

In conclusion, it is totally humane to feel low, to have our bad days. But, as Christians, we have an advantage in God’s favor, love and mercy, in that, even when we are down, He brings us up. He daily loads us with benefits. “…and on the third day, He would renew us…”
