Steps of Obedience: Following God When It’s Hard

Have you ever felt like giving up on your faith journey? Maybe you’re facing a difficult situation and wondering if following God is really worth it. You’re not alone. Many people in the Bible struggled with obedience, but their stories can inspire and encourage us to keep moving forward. Here are some relatable steps on following God when it is hard.

Step 1: Trust in God’s Goodness

When life gets tough, it’s easy to question God’s goodness. But Psalm 23:4 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me.” God’s presence is with us, even in the darkest times. Remember the times He has done it when you asked Him. Remember the last time you followed Him, how it ended well. Bring yourself to obedience and trusting the process.

Step 2: Listen to God’s Voice

Obedience requires listening to God’s voice. In John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” We can learn to recognize God’s voice through prayer, scripture, and seeking guidance from spiritual leaders. You can’t obey who you do not listen to. It actually takes listening to His voice to obey Him. Hear Him when He speaks and be able to distinguish His voice from that of the devil.

Step 3: Take Small Steps

Obedience doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We can start by taking small steps of faith. In Matthew 14:22-33, Jesus walks on water, and Peter takes a small step of faith by getting out of the boat. We can begin by taking small steps of obedience, trusting that God will guide us. Little drops makes mighty oceans. It keeps getting better as we learn to take little leaps of faith of following Him daily.

Step 4: Persevere Through Challenges

Following God is not always easy. We will face challenges and obstacles, but we can persevere through them. In James 1:2-4, we’re encouraged to “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Step 5: Celebrate God’s Faithfulness

When we obey God, we can celebrate His faithfulness. In Psalm 103:2, we’re reminded to “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” We can reflect on how God has been faithful in our lives and celebrate His goodness.

In conclusion, Following God when it’s hard requires trust, listening, taking small steps, persevering through challenges, and celebrating God’s faithfulness. We can draw inspiration from Bible stories and apply these principles to our own lives. By doing so, we can deepen our relationship with God and experience the joy and peace that come from following Him.
