The Gift of Interruptions: When God Changes Our Plans

Life, they say, is a rhythm of routines. We all have plans, goals, dreams, and aspirations, whether scribbled in journals or tucked deep within our hearts. Each of us carries the hope of a future unfolding according to our expectations.

But what happens when life throws in a detour? When the script changes? When the “yes” becomes a “no,” or the “not yet” feels like a closed door?

These are interruptions that every believer encounters at one point or another. I like to call them, “When God winks at you.”

Interruptions have a way of unsettling us. They shake up our lives, rearrange our comfort zones, alter our goals, and sometimes leave us questioning the very direction we once felt so sure of.

But what if interruptions aren’t obstacles?

What if they’re divine invitations in disguise?

The Bible reminds us in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

This tells us that our lives aren’t random. God had a plan for us before we ever drew a breath.

Still, the path He ordains may not always align with our own ideas. Because, truthfully, our ways are not His ways.

In Scripture, we find a pattern: many of the people God used were interrupted—radically.

Take Saul, for example. He was in route to persecute Christians when a blinding light interrupted his journey and changed his name, calling, and destiny (Acts 9). The great persecutor became the apostle Paul. What seemed like an interruption was really a divine initiation, a beckoning into purpose.

Often, God’s plan shows up wrapped in what our flesh calls inconvenience. It may appear as a closed door, a missed opportunity, or a delay. But Proverbs 19:21 reminds us: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

His interruptions are intentional. He knows what we don’t. He’s not trying to frustrate you, He’s trying to position you.

You may feel like your life has gone off-script. The job didn’t come. The relationship ended. The scholarship fell through. The door shut.

But could it be that God is rerouting you into something greater?

Interruptions teach us surrender. They call us to trust when we don’t understand, just like Abraham, who followed God’s call without a clear map. And because he trusted, it was credited to him as righteousness.

Interruptions challenge our illusion of control and push us deeper into dependence on the One who sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). What feels like delay might actually be divine protection from something that doesn’t fit your calling.

So don’t despise the pause. Embrace it.

Ask God what He’s doing in the in-between. Listen for His whisper. Let disappointment become the doorway to discovery.

Interruptions may not be part of your plan, but they’re often central to God’s.

And maybe when God interrupts your path, He’s winking at you, pulling you into something deeper, better, and far more beautiful than you imagined.

Dear reader, remember: Every man has a script, already written by the Author of Life.

And what we often call interruptions may just be God bringing us back to His divine script.

Because when God “winks” through a detour, it’s always a gift of alignment.

So, I leave you with this truth:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust Him. Surrender your plans. And then, every interruption will become a gift, and every change a divine redirection.

For indeed, “All things work together for good to those who love God, and are called according to His purpose.”  Romans 8:28
